A story for older readers set in more modern times – the setting is inspired by Saltburn-by-the-sea, where my grandparents used to live – a small, very elegant seaside town, just north of the Iron valley.
Matt longs to be a surfer, in the cold North Sea, but his dad is out of work and it’s an expensive hobby. He goes to visit an old lady, rather unwillingly, as part of a school project. Florrie turns out to have many surprising stories to tell and Matt learns a great deal about life from her.
A story about adoption, set in Cleveland.
This book was shortlisted for the Carnegie medal and the Sheffield children’s book award.
